John Slater's House

John and Ruth Slater built their home in 1810. It has a center chimney and is two and half stories high. The house was originally built on the corner across from the Town Hall. It was moved to it's present location in 1843 after John Slater died.

William Almy, Obadiah Brown and John Slater first built a cotton mill on this site in 1896. In 1826 it was destroyed by a fire and this mill was built to replace it. In 1828 it was producing more cotton than any other mill in the state.
North Smithfield Public Library

For many years the public libraries were in the Town's schools. In 1966 The North Smithfield Public Library opened in a building of the Western Mills, a part of the Slatersville Mill complex built in the late 1800's.  The granite walls are three feet thick.
The Stone Arch Bridge

The stone arch bridge over the Branch River was completed in 1857. It replaced an old wooden span built around 1800. This bridge, which cost $2,000 to build, is one of the finest old stone bridges in the state.
The Water Gate

The water gate controlled the amount of water flowed from the mill pond into the mill trench. The trench carried water into the mill to turn the wheels that powered the cotton spindels and looms. When the water froze in the winter, the mill could not operate. The water gate and part of the trench are located behind the library.

North Smithfield Town Hall

The brick building in the center of the villiage was
built in 1921. Henery P. Kendall donated the land
for the site. Before it was built, Mr. Slater's old
boarding house was on that site.
Kendall Dean School

Built in 1937 on land donated by the Kendall Company, the town's first kindergarten was here. It replaced the old school on School Street where there is now a playground.
Forestdale School

In this one room school, all villiage children in grades 1 through 8 were taught by one teacher. Later the school was used for primary grades and
then, until 1974, was the Eleanor Howard Kindergarten. It was built in 1876 on land donated
by the Forestdale Manufacturing Company.
The Forestdale Mill

The Forestdale Mill was built in 1860 at a waterfall on the Branch River by Mansfield and Lamb. Made of stone and three and a half stories high, it was the most important building in the villiage. The mill made cotton fabrics.
